As the fishermen observed a woman standing by the shore next to a boat, they were taken aback. It wasn’t unusual for a woman to decide to go fishing, but the presence of a bear on a leash by her side certainly was. The woman and the bear both entered the boat, rowed to the middle of the river, and began fishing. Not only did the fisherwoman cast a line, but her unusual companion did as well.
For about an hour and a half, the woman and the bear sat in the boat amidst the Ob river, casting lines and hauling in fish.
Dozens of onlookers gathered on the shore, as seeing a bear fishing outside of a circus setting is indeed a rarity.
When the boat returned to shore, the woman was bombarded with questions. It turned out that one of the fisherwoman’s friends, a circus trainer, had taken one of the bear cubs home and raised it as if it were a domestic pet.
Archie, as the bear is named, is completely tame. He understands commands and obeys humans.

Taking a bear into a boat is a risky decision.
Archie might be wise and obedient, but another bear in his place could have decided to take a swim and capsize the boat.
